Global Business Tech Awards 2027: digital health is now playing in tech's big leagues

For a long time, health technology was evaluated in its own compartment, separate from the broader tech conversation. That's changing. The Global Business Tech Awards 2027 include a HealthTech category that competes on the same stage as fintech, artificial intelligence, and other transformative digital platforms — not as a separate award, but as one more category within the technology that moves the world.

What this category evaluates

The jury reviews every submission based on three criteria: objectives and budget of the project, target audience and strategy, and implementation and creativity. It's a business criterion, not a clinical one — and that in itself says something: digital health is now judged by the same standard of rigor as any other tech industry, not with condescension for being "just health."

Why this matters beyond the award itself

The fact that digital health competes — and gains visibility — on a general technology stage, rather than only in specialized medical industry awards, is a sign of the sector's maturity. It means more investment, more competition among solutions, and, in theory, better tools reaching clinics, labs, and hospitals faster.

For a doctor, this translates into an increasingly competitive market of tools: more options, but also the need to tell apart technology with real impact from technology that just sounds good in a pitch deck. For a patient, it translates into a digital health field attracting more talent, capital, and innovation — which, over the medium term, should mean better care, not just more apps.

Digital health as a business category, not a technology charity case

It's worth noting the shift in tone: for years, health technology was financed and evaluated almost like a social cause, separate from the business logic of the rest of tech. That it now competes on equal footing against fintech or general AI reflects something those of us working in digital health in Latin America confirm every day: a clinic or lab that digitizes its operations isn't doing technology charity — it's making a business decision that also improves the care its patients receive.
