3D Reconstruction — Advanced Medical Image Visualization

Back to glossary

What Is 3D Reconstruction?

3D Reconstruction is a medical image processing technique that creates three-dimensional models from two-dimensional slices acquired through computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). By stacking and processing these cross-sections, specialized software generates volumetric visualizations that allow physicians to explore patient anatomy from any angle.

Key techniques include Volume Rendering (VR), which displays surfaces and volumes with adjustable transparency; Maximum Intensity Projection (MIP), ideal for highlighting high-density vascular structures; and Multiplanar Reconstruction (MPR), which produces views in axial, sagittal, coronal, or oblique planes from the same DICOM dataset.

3D reconstruction is essential for surgical planning, orthopedic assessment of complex fractures, and preoperative vascular analysis. Vendors such as Philips, GE, and Fujifilm offer advanced 3D visualization solutions integrated into their workstations and PACS systems.

Why It Matters in Healthcare

  • Precise surgical planning: Surgeons can study patient anatomy in three dimensions before an intervention, reducing risks and operating times.
  • Complex fracture diagnosis: MPR and VR reveal bone injuries that might be missed on conventional 2D views.
  • Vascular evaluation: MIP enables detailed mapping of arteries and veins, facilitating the diagnosis of aneurysms and stenoses.
  • Patient communication: 3D models help explain procedures in an understandable way for patients and families.
  • Education and research: Three-dimensional reconstructions serve as valuable teaching tools for resident training and clinical research.

How Davix Relates to 3D Reconstruction

  • The Davix PACS/RIS includes a web-based viewer with multiplanar reconstruction (MPR) and 3D visualization tools accessible directly from a browser.
  • No local software installation is required — physicians can perform 3D reconstructions from any network-connected device.
  • The viewer fully supports the DICOM standard, ensuring compatibility with equipment from multiple vendors.
  • Visualization tools are integrated into the teleradiology workflow, allowing remote specialists to access reconstructions seamlessly.
