HIE — Health Information Exchange
What Is HIE?
HIE (Health Information Exchange) refers to the electronic sharing of health-related information among organizations according to nationally recognized standards. It is a broader concept than point-to-point integration: HIE involves infrastructure, governance, and trust frameworks that allow data to flow securely between hospitals, clinics, laboratories, and payers.
There are three main HIE models. Directed exchange enables the secure sending of information between known providers. Query-based exchange allows searching and retrieving patient data from other organizations when needed. Consumer-mediated exchange lets patients control access to their own health information.
In the Latin American context, HIE relates directly to national digital health networks such as RENHICE in Peru and similar initiatives across the region. These programs aim to create interoperability ecosystems where patient data is available securely and timely, regardless of where it was generated. Standards like FHIR and HL7 are the technical pillars that enable HIE.
Why It Matters in Healthcare
- Continuity of care: allows providers to access a patient's complete history, reducing duplicate studies and improving clinical decisions.
- Patient safety: prevents errors from incomplete information, such as undocumented allergies or unknown drug interactions.
- Operational efficiency: eliminates manual information exchange (fax, paper, CDs) between healthcare institutions.
- Public health: facilitates epidemiological surveillance and coordinated emergency response.
- Patient empowerment: enables patients to access their own consolidated health information.
- Regulatory compliance: national digital health regulations increasingly require HIE capabilities.
How Davix Relates to HIE
- The Davix HIS supports HIE through HL7 interfaces and FHIR APIs, enabling standardized exchange with any participating system in the network.
- Cloud-native multi-site architecture facilitates data exchange across different facilities within the same healthcare group.
- Compliance with national interoperability frameworks in Latin America, including technical requirements for networks like RENHICE.
- Support for all three HIE models: directed exchange, on-demand query, and patient-controlled access.
