Set Up Teleradiology with Davix in 15 Minutes: Step-by-Step Tutorial
One of the advantages of a cloud PACS is that enabling teleradiology doesn't require complicated configurations, VPNs, or additional hardware. With Davix, you can have an external radiologist interpreting studies in under 15 minutes.
In this tutorial we show you how to do it step by step.
Before you start: what you need
- An active Davix PACS/RIS account (any plan)
- The external radiologist's details (name, email, specialty)
- Your imaging equipment already configured to send studies to Davix
If you don't have Davix yet, you can request a demo and follow this tutorial during the demonstration.
Step 1: Create the external radiologist's user (2 minutes)
From the Davix admin panel:
- Go to Settings → Users → New user
- Enter the radiologist's details: name, email, phone
- Assign the "External Radiologist" role — This role gives them access only to studies assigned to them, the DICOM viewer, and the reporting tool. They cannot see administrative, financial, or other radiologists' data.
- Click Save
The radiologist will receive an email with credentials and a link to access the platform from any browser.
Step 2: Configure automatic assignment rules (5 minutes)
Assignment rules determine which studies automatically appear in the external radiologist's worklist. You can configure rules based on:
- Modality: Assign all MRIs to Dr. Garcia (neuroradiologist) and all mammograms to Dr. Lopez.
- Schedule: Assign studies outside business hours (7pm–7am) to the external on-call team.
- Site: Assign studies from the rural site to the external radiologist pool.
- Urgency: Assign studies marked as urgent to a specific radiologist with a fast TAT commitment.
To configure:
- Go to Settings → Worklist → Assignment Rules
- Click New rule
- Define conditions (modality, schedule, site, etc.)
- Select the destination radiologist or radiologist group
- Click Save
Rules are automatically applied to new studies arriving at the PACS.
Step 3: Configure report templates (3 minutes)
So external radiologists generate reports consistent with your center's standards:
- Go to Settings → Reports → Templates
- You can use Davix's default templates or create your own
- Assign templates by modality (one template for chest CT, another for brain MRI, etc.)
- Enable electronic signing if you have the Professional plan or higher
Templates are automatically available to all radiologists when generating a report.

Schedule Free DemoStep 4: Configure notifications (3 minutes)
For teleradiology to flow smoothly, configure automatic notifications:
- Go to Settings → Notifications
- Enable the notifications you need:
| Notification | Who receives it | When it's sent |
|---|---|---|
| New assigned study | External radiologist | When a study arrives in their worklist |
| Urgent study | External radiologist | Immediately when marked as urgent |
| Signed report | Referring physician | When the radiologist signs the report |
| Signed report | Patient | When the report is available on the portal |
If you have the Enterprise plan with WhatsApp integration, notifications can also be sent via WhatsApp to ensure they're read immediately.
Step 5: Verify the complete flow (2 minutes)
Now verify everything works:
- Send a test study from your imaging equipment to the Davix PACS
- Verify the study appears in the external radiologist's worklist
- The radiologist opens the study in the viewer, generates a report, and signs it
- Verify the signed report appears associated with the study
- Verify the referring physician received the notification
If all steps worked, your teleradiology is operational.
Advanced scenarios
Multiple radiologists in a pool
If you have a group of external radiologists, you can create a pool and Davix will distribute studies equitably among available radiologists using round-robin or workload-based logic.
Mixed schedules (internal + external)
Configure schedule rules: from 8am to 6pm studies go to the internal radiologist; from 6pm to 8am and weekends, they go to the external radiologist pool. The switch is automatic.
Double reading / second opinion
For studies requiring a second opinion, configure a rule that sends the study to two radiologists simultaneously. Both reports are associated with the study for comparison.
On-demand subspecialists
Create users for subspecialists (neuroradiologist, breast radiologist) and manually assign them studies when you need their expertise. They don't need to be permanently connected — they'll receive the notification and access when available.
Frequently asked questions
Does the external radiologist need to install any software?
No. Davix is 100% web-based. The radiologist accesses from any modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) on any computer or tablet. No software, plugins, or VPN configuration needed.
Can I limit which studies the external radiologist sees?
Yes. The external radiologist only sees studies assigned to their worklist. They have no access to the center's other studies, nor to financial or administrative data. Permissions are fully configurable by role.
What happens if the external radiologist doesn't respond in time?
You can configure TAT (turnaround time) alerts that notify the administrator if a study has been without a report for more than X hours. You can also configure automatic reassignment to another radiologist if the maximum TAT is exceeded.
Do I need the Enterprise plan for teleradiology?
No. Teleradiology works from the Essential plan. The Professional plan adds electronic signing. The Enterprise plan adds WhatsApp notifications and advanced 3D/MPR viewer. Choose the plan based on the features you need.
Conclusion
Setting up teleradiology with Davix is a 5-step process that takes less than 15 minutes:
- Create the external radiologist's user
- Configure automatic assignment rules
- Define report templates
- Enable automatic notifications
- Verify the complete flow
No hardware needed, no VPN, no IT support required. Just a browser and an internet connection.
